Charlene and Stephen
My husband, Stephen Duff (’77, BS in Accounting), and I met at the Chi Omega and Pi Kappa Alpha mixer at The Green Dolphin in December of 1976. I came to the event with my best friend and saw him from across the room and immediately knew he was the man I was going to marry – despite the fact he was not my type! I was currently dating someone, as was he.
The picture is from a fundraiser at Sugar Mountain Lodge, which anyone from our era remembers well. It was a popular place to go dancing, as was Stumble Inn, where Stephen won the Greek Week competition in Disco Dancing…something he talks about to this day!
We became friends and our relationship developed over the next two years, long-distance, since he had graduated and moved back to Seattle. We figured by the time I graduated in May of 1979 we had spent a total of 45 days together.
A week after my graduation we were married and will celebrate our 34th anniversary on May 26. Our wedding party included three of my sorority sisters and two of his fraternity brothers and many more Greeks and UA alumni were in attendance. We enjoyed experiencing U of A again through our daughters’ eyes. Our oldest daughter, Ashley, attended for one year before transferring to Chapman University to complete her degree in 2005. Our youngest, Courtney, graduated from U of A in December 2010 from Eller.
We helped bring the UA Greater Phoenix Area Summer Send-Off back to life for the new incoming freshmen and their families. This Aug. 4 we will be co-chairing the event for the sixth time. It has been wonderful to reconnect with so many former Arizona classmates through our involvement. The license plate on one of our cars is RU4UA…we are truly Wildcats for Life! Go Cats!
