Wildcats@Work with Takashi Asai

After graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in marketing, Takashi Asai '96 moved to Tokyo and worked as a consultant for PwC and IBM. He is now the client director for global enterprise at Cisco Systems in Japan.

What is your current career and what are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I am in a sales management position and work with Cisco Systems as a client director. I globally support my clients, which includes automotive manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

I also lead more than 100 team members. My day-to-day responsibilities involve engaging with client executives, then leveraging Cisco’s latest IT technology to improve our clients’ business in the areas of enterprise IT, manufacturing, connected car business, IOT areas, etc.

What is the best piece of career advice you have ever received?
Try as much as you can, and it’s OK to fail. Also, think big and act bold.

How did your time at the UA prepare you to make networking connections and be successful as a professional?
My time at the UA helped me to think big and act globally. I can’t give enough thanks to my college because everything that I learned helped me get to where I am today. The biggest asset that I gained was the ability to think deeply and form my own opinion, which was very different from my Japanese culture and learning environment.
