Wildcats@Work: Lisa Miller

Lisa Miller '92 earned a bachelor's degree in psychology, which helped prepare her for a career in fundraising. She now works as the director of annual programs and a major gifts officer at Lynn University. Read more about her career and advice she has learned along the way.

What is your current job and what are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I am a major gifts officer for Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. I am responsible for raising $1 million per year to support the Lynn Conservatory of Music, Lynn Drama and many of our colleges.

How did your time at the UA prepare you to make networking connections and be successful as a professional?
My time at the UA was instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today. I learned about different cultures, religions, opinions and views, which helped me to appreciate all the different people that I work with on campus at Lynn.

My degree from the UA is in psychology, but one summer I needed a part-time job and started working for the Telephone Outreach Program. That is what put me on the path to doing fundraising for a living. Fundraising is the only job I have ever had!

What is the best piece of career advice you have ever received?
Pay attention to the details. Whether it’s the details of an article, an event that someone is creating, or what an employee/business associate is saying or not saying to you. There is a message in everything that happens and I think people today, in business, want to think that their leaders know them and appreciate their work. Pay attention to the details and the best will come from the people you work with and the customers you serve.
