January 8th Memorial

January 2021 marked the 10-year anniversary of the shooting in Tucson at a Congress on Your Corner event held by then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Six people died in the tragedy; 13 others were seriously wounded, including Giffords. On Jan. 8, 2021, a commemorative ceremony took place to dedicate the January 8th Memorial, called The Embrace.

Survivors of the shooting, as well as families of the victims and emergency workers who responded to it, were invited to the dedication. The memorial is in downtown Tucson, on the west side of the Historic Pima County Courthouse.

The National Institute for Civil Discourse, a nonpartisan center created to advance civility in public discourse, was established by the University of Arizona in February 2011 in response to the shooting.
