Old Main, the heart of campus, a giving priority

As the University of Arizona embarks on its next comprehensive fundraising campaign, one of  the campaign priorities will be the Old Main renovation project.

In the spirit of preserving tradition, alumni and friends are contributing to the building’s renovation while also sharing their Old Main memories and stories. Alumni engagement around the project demonstrates that Old Main remains a popular destination in the heart of campus.

"Old Main is where I found out I was accepted into the UA as a pre-business major," says Brittany Lafreniere ’13. "It was a day that forever changed my life. Now, as an alumna of the UA and Eller, I love knowing that every time I go to the UA, I will see Old Main and still feel that overwhelming feeling of accomplishment that I did when I was accepted."

The renovation plan by Tucson firm Poster Frost Mirto Inc. artfully blends tradition with modern sensibilities. When Old Main opens this summer, visitors can tour and explore the updated building and relax in the shade of its famous porches. Prospective students will begin their campus tours here, where they will learn of the University’s rich heritage.

Old Main will also be the starting spot for a heritage trail — a tour of historic places on campus — while the first floor will become a space to celebrate the University’s past, present, and future. With funding from donor gifts, the space will include displays and interactive exhibits. Alumni reunions, receptions, and other events also will be held in Old Main.

Fundraising for Old Main will continue throughout the comprehensive campaign until all expenses for the renovation and heritage project are met.
